The American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) named Owen‐Ames‐Kimball the Michigan Contractor of the Year during its fifth annual MCOY Awards celebration held October 16 at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
Founded in 1891, Grand Rapids-based Owen-Ames‐Kimball (O‐A‐K) is the longest-standing commercial contractor in the State of Michigan. The firm has overseen the construction of some of the area’s most celebrated structures, as well as projects in 38 other states. O-A-K’s focus on teamwork, integrity, accountability, flexibility and community helped it stand out amid a field of worthy MCOY competitors.
This is the second MCOY Award for O‐A‐K, which was previously honored in 2011.
ASAM also recognized Grand Rapids-‐based Pioneer Construction as 2014 MCOY Awards runner up, and the group awarded an honorable mention to Holland’s Elzinga & Volkers Construction Professionals. Elzinga & Volkers won the MCOY Award in 2012.
The MCOY Awards give ASAM membership an opportunity to nominate and recognize general contractors or construction managers that exhibit best practices, professionalism and collaboration with Michigan’s subcontracting community.
Through online voting, ASAM members scored the candidates’ performance in 10 areas: bid ethics and practice, safety, jobsite supervision, communication, schedule coordination, project relations, lien processes, administrative procedures, payment terms, and quality workmanship.
Over 400 people attended ASAM’s celebration of the area’s contracting industry leaders, including representatives from Dan Vos Construction Company, the 2013 MCOY Award winner. Also attending were personnel from the event’s key sponsors, including Beene Garter LLP; Titan Equipment; Acrisure; Andy J. Egan Company, Architectural Metals Incorporated; Berends Hendricks Stuit Insurance Agency, Kent Companies, Inc.; Kerkstra Precast, Macatawa Bank, Pleune Service Company, Titan Interiors, VanLaan Concrete Construction, Inc; Vos Glass, Inc.; and Windemuller Electric, Inc.
As this year’s MCOY winner, Owen‐Ames‐Kimball will be nominated by ASAM for the 2014 National Construction Best Practices Awards. Developed by the American Subcontractors Association’s Task Force on Ethics in the Construction Industry, these awards recognize elite prime contractors that uphold best practices and refuse to do business according to the “lowest Common denominator.” ASA Will honor award recipients at the 2015 ASA Annual Convention in Seattle, WA, March 26-29.
