Join us in celebrating National Women in Construction Week. At O‑A‑K, we are thankful for our many women employees and business partners, who enhance our company and our industry. We've asked our employees to reflect on the topic and share inspiration.
Jane Leahy, Project Superintendent
Why did you choose construction?
"I chose construction because every day is a little bit different from the last. With that comes new challenges, but it is very rewarding when you see the end result. You see those huge buildings and have to remember that men and women put the whole thing together one piece at a time."
Kim Burchardt, Accountant
What is your most memorable moment working in construction?
"During college, I worked for an excavator. Eventually I worked my way up to become partner. At times we were short on help, so I ran a bulldozer to push fill dirt, and I ran roller packers on parking lots. A little change of scenery can be fun!"
Courtney James, Project Manager
Who inspires you?
"My mom. She was a single parent, school secretary who worked two jobs since I was in the 5th grade. She instilled in me a strong work ethic, to always follow the Golden Rule, know that no task is beneath me, and whatever I chose to do, do it to the best of my ability."
Frank Stanek, President & CEO
How have women impacted the construction industry of today?
"As our industry continues to evolve, we are seeing more and more women pursue careers in construction – and we are benefiting greatly from that shift. Women bring a fresh perspective, which is very refreshing for a traditionally male-dominated industry. I would be proud if my daughters pursued careers in construction someday."
Mandalyn Powers, Assistant Project Manager
Why did you choose construction?
I didn’t specifically choose construction; but, now that I’m in it, I love going to my job every day. I started at O‑A‑K in the accounting department and moved from there to an assistant project manager position. This summer, I will be on the jobsite so I can learn more about the day-to-day work in the field.
