(GRAND RAPIDS, MI) – Some 98 years after helping construct the original structure, Grand Rapids construction management firm Owen-Ames-Kimball (O-A-K) is now celebrating the completion of the historic McKay Tower’s newest feature, the Ballroom at McKay. The state-of-the-art banquet space held its grand opening event on May 17.
As Construction Manager overseeing renovations of The Ballroom, O-A-K brought an impressive portfolio of downtown Grand Rapids construction experience with a unique interest in this particular project.
Founded in Grand Rapids in 1891, O-A-K shares a long history with the iconic downtown building. The company built the original two-story building, then known as the Grand Rapids National Bank, in 1915, and the additional twelve stories added in 1925.
The Ballroom at McKay, approved for renovations in November 2012, utilizes all 10,900 square feet of former second floor bank to showcase the historic charm while providing the amenities required for a modern event production. Complete with a commercial kitchen, the rental space will be used for special events such as wedding receptions, business meetings, holiday parties and banquets. The space, which intends to offer alcohol service, will accommodate approximately 200 guests.
